Visit of the ICANN Representative and Discussion of the Prospects for the Development of Uzbekistan's Domain Industry

On October 10, 2024, a meeting between the .UZ domain administration, represented by UZINFOCOM Unified Integrator, and ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) Senior Manager Mikhail Anisimov, who was on an official visit to Uzbekistan, took place.

For reference: ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is an international non-profit organization established on September 18, 1998, with the participation of the U.S. government to regulate issues related to domain names, IP addresses, and other aspects of Internet operation.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the development of the domain industry globally, particularly in Uzbekistan, where active changes and the implementation of new technologies in domain management are taking place. Key areas for further cooperation were identified, including the introduction of advanced technologies and improving infrastructure.

A representative from the company "SUVAN NET," which recently received ICANN accreditation, was also present at the meeting. This event symbolizes the active participation of .UZ domain registrars in international processes related to the domain industry.

Mikhail Anisimov also provided information about a special working group for ICANN registrars, which will support registrars in their activities.

Additionally, the advantages of joining the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (CCNSO) were discussed. This would provide the .UZ domain administration the opportunity to participate in developing international Internet governance policies, strengthening Uzbekistan’s position in the domain industry, and actively engaging in ICANN activities.

Another important aspect of the discussion was the potential placement of an L-ROOT server in Uzbekistan.

For reference: The L-ROOT server is one of 13 root servers managed by different organizations worldwide. It is supported by ICANN and is part of a global network of servers distributed across different regions, ensuring the reliability and speed of the Internet. Root servers process millions of requests daily and are a foundation for the DNS system's operation.

Earlier, it was reported that the first K-ROOT server was launched in Uzbekistan by the UZINFOCOM Unified Integrator in collaboration with RIPE NCC.

Moreover, the .UZ domain administration presented its project for holding an auction within the .UZ domain zone. This project, proposed by UZINFOCOM, is intended to combat cybersquatting and help establish a secondary domain market. Mikhail Anisimov praised the administration’s efforts to achieve greater transparency and fairness in this matter.

Thus, the meeting was productive, and its participants expressed their readiness for active cooperation and continued exchange of experience to implement joint initiatives. This dialogue lays the foundation for further strengthening cooperation in developing Internet infrastructure and the DNS system in Uzbekistan.
